Senior Qualitative Research and Evaluation Manager (m/f/d) (J2011SQREM)


The Center for Evaluation and Development (C4ED), Germany, is looking for a full-time Senior Research and Evaluation Manager for qualitative research methods at the earliest possible date.  The successful candidate will assume a leadership position towards mixed methods impact evaluations as well as purely qualitative evaluation projects taking place in developing countries and thus will make a decisive contribution to the coordination of our Qualitative Research Team.

C4ED’s vision is to improve the lives of the poor and vulnerable by making development interventions more effective. With a strong focus on mixed-methods and quantitative impact evaluations in developing countries, C4ED is one of the leading German research centers in the areas of poverty reduction, microfinance, health insurance, education, humanitarian assistance, agriculture and nutrition. C4ED is currently conducting projects all over the world and maintains research relationships with 3ie, ACTED, GCF, IFAD, ILO, IPA, J-PAL, the World Bank, WFP and UNICEF to name just a few of its cooperation partners.

As Senior Research and Evaluation Manager for qualitative research methods, you will have a leading role in designing, managing and conducting qualitative data collection and analysis. Coordinating the Qualitative Research Team will take up 35% of your time while this task will be limited to the first year. Your work would include:

  • Designing and planning qualitative research strategies in cooperation with clients
  • Developing qualitative research instruments (for instance, interview and focus group topic guides) for use in evaluation studies in developing countries
  • Supervising multiple qualitative data collection simultaneously, for instance, through key informant interviews, focus groups, in depth interviews and observations
  • Delivering training sessions on qualitative research methods
  • Analyzing qualitative data
  • Preparing policy briefs, reports, and scientific publications
  • Contributing to applications for projects and grants
  • Acting as a link between management and C4ED’s Qualitative Research Team
  • Ensure that the Qualitative Research Team’s financial goals are achieved


You have a postgraduate degree in social science, international development or a related field, with extensive training and experience in leading research teams conducting qualitative data collection and analysis. Qualitative research experience with vulnerable groups or in conflict-affected areas would be a plus. Familiarity with (applying) quantitative impact evaluation methodologies is a plus but not required. Knowledge of issues in development (e.g. agriculture, education, health and development, child labor, gender equality, poverty, inclusive development) is also a plus.

You have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; written and verbal communication skills in other languages (e.g. French, Spanish, Portuguese) would be a plus. Knowledge of software used for qualitative analysis (e.g. MAXQDA, NVivo) is desirable but not required.

You are detail-oriented, adept at multitasking and can work under pressure. You enjoy interacting with a wide range of individuals ranging from researchers to clients and local partners, and you are able to maintain good collaborations.

The position is based in Mannheim and may include short travel to research project sites in developing countries.
