The International Civil Society Centre helps the leading international civil society organisations (ICSOs) maximise their impact for a sustainable and more equitable world. 

The Centre works with ICSOs such as Amnesty International, Greenpeace or Oxfam to successfully navigate change. We scan the horizon for opportunities and threats; enable learning and cooperation among ICSOs and their stakeholders; support them in developing effective leadership; and promote robust accountability to strengthen their legitimacy. The Centre is a not-for-profit organisation fully owned by the organisations it serves. We strive to set high standards in management, governance and strategy for our shareholders and the wider sector.

The Centre is looking for a Programme Director (m/f/d), who will drive the development of the Centre’s programme and lead our growing team in an empowering way. With a team of dedicated and ambitious colleagues, s/he will develop both new content and new formats for civil society leaders to best move the sector. Our new Programme Director shall support the development of new ways of working in the programme team and beyond, to create agility, cohesion and collaboration, including the use of digital means and tools. This is a key strategic position, working together with the Executive Director and the entire team to increase partnerships, engagement and innovation. It provides a broad range of insights into the civil society sector and entails cooperation with many of the sector’s most eminent leaders


Main tasks and responsibilities 

  • Content Leadership, including overall responsibility for conceptualising and implementing projects and programmes according to the Centre’s strategy, on topics such as global power shifts, major trends and futures, innovations, SDGs and shrinking political space; 
  • Team Leadership of 6-8 colleagues, manage their capacities and ensure professional development, facilitate effective teamwork and smooth coordination with other Centre teams; 
  • Network Leadership in managing relationships and increasing engagement with project partners, facilitate workshops and meetings, and further develop and expand the Centre’s network and outreach; 
  • Fundraising Leadership, supporting fundraising with grant proposals and programme conceptualisation, ensure professional donor reporting of a growing budget of approx. 1.5 million EUR per year   
  • Centre Leadership in developing and implementing organisational strategies together with the Executive Director, particularly in agile project management and team building in digital(ising) work environments  


Main requirements and qualifications 

  • Minimum of five years of experience in management and leadership in civil society or other relevant sectors; 
  • Strong interest in the future and development of civil society organisations; ideally a solid network in the international civil society sector; 
  • Innovative thinking; track record of thought leadership and implementation of new ideas / projects;  
  • ‘Can do’ attitude, balancing conceptual and strategic thinking with hands-on approach; 
  • Strong experience in leadership and agile management of diverse, international and ambitious teams; 
  • Experience with programme and project management including financial side;

Terms: Permanent contract with a six months probation period 

Working hours: 40 hours per week, flexible working hours, including home office opportunities, 28 days of annual leave 

Competitive Salary determined by experience and qualifications 

Location: Berlin, Germany with about 20% international travel
